Jules Smith states with great fervour that all her work is about the city. The works on display have been selected from three distinct series:

  •   City reflected in buildings
  •   The archaelogical series: the collages
  •   The Reflections series

Jules Smith's journeys through the city echo her journey through life; from the harsh, linear compartmentalised world of her early 'blocks' and personal traumas, she went on deconstructing and reconstructing the city in her delicate collages, 'just as the city is constantly being torn down and reassembled'. The artist went on to tackle more intractable aspects of urban life; urban ponds an lakes yielded the imagery of water reflections. More recently, she has investigated the city's underlying 'connections':

'I cannot just do a cityscape like a landscape - city space is too abstract. It has lots of interconnected spaces, it is lots of different things to different people, it changes in time and as you journey through it. Landmarks are more like figures to me than mere buildings. The ghosts of past and future hover around shaping the present'.
